9:00 AM - 9:30 AM The sky is the limit or is it? Super tall towers inspiring façade design innovation

Abdulmajid Karanouh, Director, Head of Innovation Design, Facades & Sustainability, Ramboll
Well-designed and built towers offer a magnificent display of mankind’s ambitions and brilliance. The higher we aspire to go, the more challenging and exciting the ride gets. That said, however, the higher we build the stronger the debate grows between profitability and sustainability, between compliance and performance, and between cost and value. As the world’s population keep growing, so will the need for higher density living and subsequently the perceived need to grow taller. The taller the tower the higher the demand for performance and economy.
Traditional static façades of limited functionality will always fall short of optimal performance in the highly dynamic and complex context of the supertall. This presentation offers an innovative approach to supertall tower design and high-performance adaptive envelopes as an integrated and highly efficient system using computation-augmented algorithmic thinking.

11:10 AM - 11:40 AM From concept to operation: How measurement and data analysis coupled with technology optimise façade sustainability

Holley Chant, Executive Director Corporate Sustainability, KEO International Consultants
With the increase in regulations, sustainability is one of the main concerns for developers and architects around the region. This exclusive case study will consider sustainability regulations and ratings and the role of building physics during the design phase as well as the role of traditional commissioning and virtual commissioning.

12:20 PM - NaN:NaN AM Façade or fashion: Great design is more than skin deep

Yahya Jan, President and Design Director, NORR
Buildings treat their façades like high fashion, they are a way to stand out and make a visual statement. However, it is not just about a pretty façade. This case study will delve into the function of the skin of the building, giving examples of newly constructed projects as well as buildings under construction. This session will also consider the evolving role of technology in liberating design ideas.

1:50 PM - 3:20 PM Awards ceremony and cocktail reception: Recognising façade designs in the Middle East

With the increase in environmental considerations and sustainability of high-rise buildings, it is essential for architects to understand how to develop smart, high-performing façades that provide comfort for its occupants as well as reduced costs. Regulations and prescribed solutions across the Middle East emphasise that the future is green but are these practices actually creating intelligent facades? This session debates whether prescribed solutions alone are enough to create high-performing façades and design methodologies that can enhance the building’s performance.

2:30 PM - NaN:NaN AM Understanding glass selection for Middle East projects: Performance, quality and glass failures

Benjamin Beer, Technical Director, Meinhardt
Glass is indeed important but we need to interpret its usage logically. This exclusive case study will analyse:
l Single, double and triple silver low-e coatings – selectivity ratio, shading coefficient vs. light transmittance
l Advanced calculation software for glass performance analysis
l Simulation and renderings of visual appearance of glass low-e coatings during design stage
l Glass flatness and optical distortion, online laser based distortion measurement systems
l Importance of insulating glass edge seal testing for adhesion and compatibility
l Glass failures and problems – a consultant review

Benjamin Beer

Technical Director
Meinhardt
Architects in the Middle East are continuously searching for larger glass panels and clearer glass, constantly pushing the boundaries in terms of glass selection criteria. There is no doubt that glass is an essential component of building façades allowing occupant’s views of the city and given an impressive ‘modern’ finish.
However, in a Middle Eastern climate, is glass efficient? This session will debate the future of heavily glazed façades in the Middle East as well as discussing innovative smart glass technology and using glass alongside more sustainable materials.
